i can feel what i can only describe as my veins wiggling in my lower extremities. i do not believe it is related to muscle spasms, is this possible and if so, what are the causes?

: Your veins won't wiggle. You may be experiencing mild irritability of muscles or superficial nerves in your legs. Sometimes you can visualize mild benign fasciculations of your leg muscles. Have you been more active on your legs lately?  Avoid caffeine. You could try taking a magnesium supplement recommended by your pharmacist. If symptoms persist get examined by your physician or a neurologist.

how is superficial phlebitis distinguished from varicose veins?

Inflammation: Varicose veins are dilated/enlarged veins. Superficial phlebitis is an inflammatory condition where a clot develops in a vein near the skin surface.

could my possible foot injury have aggravated the varicose veins and caused phlebitis?

Accepted Answer

Its possible: If the foot injury is on the same side as the phlebitis, it is possible. In the area of treatment, you still need an anticoagulant (aspirin, Heparin shots, coumadin) for the phlebitis and compression. Usually phlebitis resolves with treatment in 3 to 6 months. Sometimes an ultrasound helps.

the veins on the top of one of my feet are suddenly bulging and slightly uncomfortable (24 hours ago). no swelling or significant pain. is thrombophlebitis a concern?

Accepted Answer

: It is almost never or very rare to have thrombophlebitis bilaterally at the same time. Your foot problem could be due to your new footwear or an unusual body position on the day before. You can apply ice pad locally and raise your feet up when sitting or lying down as much as possible in the next 1-2 days.  See your doctor if symptom persists or get worse by Monday. Good luck.

i have had superficial thrombophlebitis in my varicose veins in my left leg.  how do i prevent it for the future?

Support socks...: And hosiery can help.  Consult with your doctor about why you may have had the problem in the first place.  You may need to be put on a blood thinner, or at least a daily dose of aspirin. On plane trips, make sure you get up and walk around often.

several veins in forearm sting. veins are soft & skin is normal color. veins engorge when hands by sides and constrict when raised. thrombophlebitis?

Not thrombophlebitis: It is normal for veins to expand and contract in relation to their relative position to the height of the heart.
Throbophlebitis is a clot in the vein  and such a vein would not change with the height of the arm

Appropriate Rx: This appears to be a conservative treatment course but the primary concern is why you developed the svt. Is it due to underlying dvt? Chronic venous insufficiency? Clotting disorder? Make sure that the cause has been evaluated to prevent future recurrences. In the meantime lower extremity compression stockings are likely your best long term preventative treatment. Surgery may be indicated after us.

RSD: You probably have damage to the nerves of your leg which is causing pain.

Accepted Answer

Herniated disc: Herniated discs can impinge on a nerve root and lead to pain, numbness and weakness. When weakness develops, it is important to see a neurosurgeon to evaluate and treat the disc herniation so that the weakness does not become permanent.

what is the difference between sympathetically meditated pain vs. sympathetically independent pain of the lower extremities?

Accepted Answer

Pain: Sympathetically mediated pain classically is crps. Any other pain of lower extremity is considered non-sympathetically mediated pain.
