Yellow sputum: Well, different reason, it could be due to smoking, exposure to irrtants, chronic sinusitis, Posterior nasal discharge due to allergy or sinusitis.

some mornings i wake up and hack up some yellow/brown phlegm. its usually when i first wake up. i don't have a cough or feel sick. is this normal?

Maybe postnasal drip: Mild nasal allergies can cause some muscus dripping in back of throat/mouth and collects there during sleep and can turn a bit brown in the am. During day, little mucus/drip is pulled down by gravity, but when sleeping mucus tends to stay in back of throat and thus productive coughing/coughing in the early am. If worsens, call doc for eval. Good luck.

i have been sick over 2 monthsi can't get rid of cough and yellow phlegm. i'm not a smoker. what can i do?

Have you seen doctor: If you have had cough and purulent sputum for over 2 months, you have some kind of serious respiratory infection.  While smokers certainly get more of these, non-smokers can get any kind of infection as well. Your doctor needs to examine you, take a full history, probably get samples of your sputum for testing and probably a Chest Xray or other imaging studies of your lungs. See your doc NOW.

Time to see the doc: You are doing so much right!  But a month-long productive cough suggests to me it is time to have a doctor listen to your lungs, check your sinuses, perhaps analyze the phlegm. Hang in there.

my son (3), has been sick on and off for the last 2 months. he currently has a really bad cough, especially at night and early mornings and is vomiting yellow phlegm and  complains of pain in his chest and tummy. fever below 38 though. ?

Needs to see doctor: If he has been ill for 2 months, it is high time for  him to be seen by a doctor. Too many things are happening .

Virus &amp;/or allergies: Viral upper respiratory infections can hang around for weeks, but may be compounded by allergies. Sinus infection is another possibility. Best to see a primary care provider at this point for a more complete evaluation. Hope this helps!

Exercise/infection: There is some evidence that parameters of immune function can be slightly diminished with intense exercise but this is more than balanced by the beneficial effects of exercise. The probability here is that you are being exposed to classmates with infections that are transmitted to you, and not that your immune system is being compromised.

can i take my 5 avelox hcl 400 mg tablets?  i am bringing up yellow phlegm. i have a sore throat, gargled salt water and took tylenol (acetaminophen) still feel sick?

See pcp: Before starting quinalones, they , don't help strep infection. Antibiotics in viral infection rarely help unless secondary infection has set in!

Need follow-up SOON!: Yes!  you definitely need to  see your medical practitioner soon - you likely have an infection that does not respond to penicillin (which does work well for  tooth infections, but not for respiratory infections).  They will likely put you on a different antibiotic, one that works  on the type of bacteria it sounds like you have in your chest, and the colored drainage should  clear up soon.
