Possible causes / risks for excessively long periods include but are not limited to: uterine fibroids, polyps, adenomyosis , endometrial cancer, type i diabetes mellitus, bleeding disorders (l.E., von  willebrand dz), clotting problems, infection, ovarian cyst, endometriosis ; hashimoto thyroiditis.

Depends on your age: In teens or perimenopausal females, menstrual cycles can be irregular because of fluctuating hormone levels. If you are in neither of these groups, causes include: starting or stopping oral contraceptives, STD's, infections, stress, increased/decreased weight, drugs or meds. Make sure to mention this to your Dr if it persists. Exam and testing can allow the Dr to treat any underlying conditions.

Lysteda (non-hormonal rx taken during period), Mirena (levonorgestrel) iud. Minimally invasive options: endometrial ablation (in-office), hysteroscopy polyp removal or fibroid resection; and only if these treatments fail then consider hysterectomy - vaginal or laparoscopic if possible.

Having one of these symptoms doesn’t necessarily mean there is a medical problem, but a visit or a call to one’s primary care or Ob-Gyn doctor is a good idea if symptoms are persistent, recurring, or worrisome.

Need more info: You should be having a monthly period (unless you are on some birth control methods).  If you have skipped a period and think that you could be pregnant, check a pregnancy test.  If you are concerned about a change in your bleeding during your menses, talk to your doctor about your periods.  It is helpful to keep a calendar of your periods to review with your doctor.
