hi, i am currently in thyroxine . is it ok to drink peppermint tea? i have heard it can affect my medication. thanks

OK as far as known: There is relatively research on the interactions of drugs and herbs but I am not aware of any evidence that thyroxine and peppermint tea interact. my whole digestive tract (from throat through bowels to rectum) is always gurgling. doctor says it's likely ibs/gerd, but no medications work to stop it, i've tried antacids, gas-x etc, only thing that seems to work a little is peppermint tea?

: The gurgling is due to peristaltis, contractions of the intestinal tract moving juices,foods down towards the colon &amp;rectum. Apparently you don't have any other symptoms like loose stools, cramps,bloating,heartburn. If the gurgling is a nuisance a medication like dicyclomine could quiet those intestinal gurgling sounds.

i read that there are side effects of using peppermint oil capsules, as with any drug, but are they severe?

Generally Safe: Probably safe in the short term (less than 8 weeks). Heartburn, allergic reactions, flushing, headache and mouth sores are most common.  Since peppermint is processed in the liver, check with your physician to make sure that there are no interactions with other medications you are taking that are also processed along similar pathways in the liver.

i had ibs with excessive gas that causes discomfort ,how we can treat excessive gas formation in first place besides drugs for relief discomfort like peppermint oil or mebevrine that only reduce discomfort but not treat the problem of excessive gas ?

: If you are producing excessive amounts of gas, it is sometimes possible to pinpoint particular foods that are the culprits. It may take a visit with a nutritionist who deals specifically with IBS. Contact your gastroenterologist for a referral, if appropriate. Good luck.

are there any real benefits to herbs/supplements vs some over-the-counter drugs? ie: melanin vs diphenhydramine, peppermint/catnip vs tylenol (acetaminophen)?

Absolutely: Let's clarify - over-the-counter drugs (otcs) are virtually the same medications as prescription ones except that they've been granted the freedom to be sold without prescription due to their "benign" profile. Supplements are not medications in and of themselves. They are more or less "naturally" derived preparations that are used for the same purpose as meds. Some of them can be as effective too.

No problems: with either of these two things that I know of.  They may not help, but they probably can't hurt.

Peppermint leaves: Peppermint leaves will not cure gum disease, cavities, or acid reflux. The peppermint will mask the halitosis, but not cure it. Determine the cause of your problem, treat it, and be rid of it. Seek a consultation with a local dentist to start.
