my son put a piece of green pepper up his nose. we have tried a snot sucker  and it is not working. he is 2 years old and is now constantly crying probably because it burns?

Foreign body: Unfortunately these products can have both a local irritant effect and become infected after mucous forms around them. Removal under direct observation by the doc may be you best bet. I have removed beads/pork cubes/paper wads/foam/ toy pieces/etc. . Most of these can be removed in the office. A 2 yo may require sedation but rarely.

my 2 year old has a stuffy runny nose. is it safe for her to take children's cold medicine with decongestant now that she is over two years?

FDA approved: Over the counter cold medications are approved by the FDA for children 2 and older, when taken at the recommended doses.

my cousin's two year old boy fell over the back of the loveseat this morning. he went crashing face first to the floor.he bled on/off all day. how do we get to know if he has a broken nose?

Accepted Answer

You don't: Most 2 year olds are very flexible and a broken nose is unlikely but only an xray would tell for sure.  A doctor may get an idea from the exam and amount of tenderness on palpation and movement.  Make sure he can breath through his nose and there is not undue swelling and look for any devaition.

Col.: nit enough information does your child have a fever is he wheezing or is his breathing sound very noisy as this could be bronchiolitis if none of these are present other than runny nose and cough saline nasal washes increased fluid intake can do the trick . If it does not resolve follow up with the pediatrician

Nose block: Steam inhalation s with Vicks vaporub. Room humidifier.  If you can manage saline nasal lovage.  See the pediatrician.

Anytime : Anytime a child who can sit, stand, walk and talk stops being able to do these things, they need to be seen emergently.  These could be signs of a serious problem with the brain such as bleeding, infection, stroke or tumor.  You should call your child's doctor if she has one yet in california.  If she does not, then she need to go to the emergency department.

Dry nose: It may be secondary to a viral cold or a dry nose. Use a saline nasal spray or gel to ease it. If it continues, see your doctor, especially if the discharge is in one nostil, she may have gotten something stuck in her nose.

after a head injury to a two year old, how do you know if your child's nose is running or if its the clear fluid  that your told to watch for?

It's tricky: The clear fluid you are talking about is cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) presumably leaking from the cribiform plate (were the nerves involved in smell are located).  The fluid can be sent to the lab for analysis, but in general, if the CSF leak is significant, the patient has other symptoms like headache and anosmia (can't smell).  This is tough to tell in a young child.  If concerned, see your doctor.

my two year old has a cold. should i encourage him to keep blowing his nose until it is clear? will this make his nose to sore?

Cold in 2 yrs old: You can use saline nose drops which will make it easy to blow his nose.It will not make his nose sore.

is a green booger and bloody nose in a two-year-old a sign of infection?

Accepted Answer

Yes most likely: If the congestion has been longer than 10 days and there is night or early morning coughing the bit can be a bacterial sinus infection. If its less than 10 days then it may be a viral infection. Nose bleeding can happen in either case. Also one must make sure there is no foreign body.
