Good question: We still don't know for sure.  There is definitely a strong hereditary component.  When our immune surveillance encounters a potential invader it triages the type of response like branches of the military.  But in this case they mistakenly sent the air force instead of the police. Co-factors are involved like diesel exhaust.  Early antigen exposure seems to be protective. See Hygeine Hypothesis

Benzodiazepines: Benzodiazepines are commonly prescribed for short term anxiety.  Hydroxyzine is also used. Anxiety medications have important side-effects, which limit their use.

Stress response can make many conditions worse including aggravating asthma and hives, but this is not a true allergic reaction.  That is what makes it challenging for modern medicine to "prove" that stress is so important---it is difficult to measure.

History, History, et: Specific allergens are sometimes very evident; itchy eyes around cut grass, hives with peanuts, wheezing around cats, anaphylaxis with insect sting. However other allergens such as molds, mites, cockroach, and foods are less obvious. A full history by an allergy specialist and if approprate skin testing for inhalants and/or injestants or in special situations blood tests can help identify causes.

Yes (rare): Solar urticaria is hives triggered by the sun.  This is very rare.  More likely are photo-toxic or photo-allergic reactions due to medications that when the person is exposed to the sun trigger a rash.  These are quite common and if confusing can be diagnosed by allergists or dermatologists.

Get tested: There are two ways to find out what you are allergic to, although both must be correlated and analyzed by a physician.  Skin testing is the gold standard for inhaled allergens such as pollen or animal dander.  A new alternative is an ige blood test which can also check for food allergies.

No: No, allergies are to specific proteins.  More likely, you're allergic to something that person wears like a natural fiber of clothing, a perfume/cologne, a lotion/cream, or something external on their body or clothes like cat dander for example.
