Antibiotic: Penicillin is one of the first antibiotic ever developed to treat infection.  Unfortunately, due to it's widespread and indiscriminate use, many bacteria became resistant to this great antibiotic.   
Today we still use it to treat many different types of infection caused by bacteria sensitive to penicillin.

By the late 1970's the strains of penicillin resistant gonorrhea had become so common that penicillin use was no longer considered a proper selection to treat such an important infection. Other medications were developed that work effectively.

MVP: Pcn used to be used as a prophylactic anti biotic for mvp to prevent SBE .  How ever present recommendations are that there is no need for anti biotic prophylaxis for simple  mvp  and as such pcn usage for mvp has been discontinued.

many: This medication may cause stomach upset, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting during the first few days as your body adjusts to the medication. Symptoms include: difficulty breathing, skin rash, hives, itching. If you notice other effects not listed.

A cousin: Ampicillin is an antibiotic closely related to penicillin. If you are allergic to one, you are allergic to the other.

Yes in some cases: If you have an abscessed tooth the penicillin will help the pain. It will not cure the problem though. If it is an abcessed tooth you will need root canal or extraction.
