what are pelvic adhesions? why do people with endometriosis have adhesions?

Accepted Answer

Adhesions: Scar tissue produced by inflammatory response from the body fighting a tissue that should not be there. These adhesions wrap tissues or bridge from on organ to another organ(tube to an ovary). Also adhesions could be formed as a result of surgeries.

i have chronic pelvic pain & lately i've been seeing blood in my stool.could it be endometriosis complications?can pelvic u.s show adhesions on colon?

See below: Blood in your stool is most likely hemorrhoids or a problem in the colon.  You should report this to your doctor ASAP.  Endometriosis doesn't usually cause blood in the colon.  Ultrasound is not a good imaging modality to see adhesions on the colon.  Best wishes!

Not always.: Endometriosis is usually pretty obvious to the surgeon and pathology tests are often not needed just to make the diagnosis at the time of surgery; however, if anything is removed from the body it will be sent to pathology for tests.  Biopsies are sometimes done if there is question about the diagnosis.  Best wishes!

Adhesions are likely: The thing that sounds most likely would be more adhesions. The worrisome thing would be a possible bowel obstruction due to adhesions but the ct should have shown this.

how to cure adhesion in endometriosis?

Treatment: Peritoneal adhesions often accompany endometriosis, although not always. When adhesions are seen at laparoscopy they are treated by dissecting from normal surfaces and sometimes with removal. Not to be picky, but i describe this as 'treatment' rather than 'cure' because chance of recurrance is not insignificant. There are no non-surgical treatments for adhesive disease.

Endo & Nodes: I am not aware of endometriosis causing lymph node enlargement.  Pelvic lymph nodes, you mean groin nodes that are palpable?  Causes could be std, malignancy or normal.  See your doctor.

No endometriosis: Endometrial implants can only be seen by direct visualization either by laparoscopy (small camera inserted into abdomen) or by opening up the abdomen(laparotomy). Both are surgical procedures.

Accepted Answer

Pelvic infections: Any type of major pelvic or abdominal infections such as PID, Tuberculosis, or a ruptured infected intestine can cause external and internal uterine adhesions.

Endo: Endometriosis could affect the colon, the appendix, the liver, very rarely, lungs and brain.
