Unnecessary: It wont harm the baby, but it's unnecessary.  You want to give your baby her best nutrition which is breast milk or formula.   She needs the fat, carbohydrates and protein for her little brain and body to grow.

Yes.: Follow dosage quidelines.  Should be no problem, but I am assuming you are giving it for the right reason!

possibly: Any product when given in excess could have negative effects.I have seen infants force fed the product develop profuse diarrhea that only stopped when it was limited.  If it is given for an extended period with no form of nutrition, the infant will develop starvation. It is a safe and effective hydration solution when used as part of a balanced treatment plan.

at what age can an infant start drinking water and how much? for example, if the child is sick, can you given them only pedialyte?

See below: Pedialyte is only recommended for a child with vomiting and diarrhea. Discuss the addition of water with your child's provider. There is usually no indication to give just plain water.

Not the best: Pedialyte and water are used more for hydration issues in a child.  You need to speak with your Pediatrician regarding treatments for a 7 week old, as "too much" water should not be given either. Best wishes.

Being baby to dr: Bring baby to pediatrician, vomiting in newborn can be sign of congenital disorder, you shouldn't need pedialyte for newborn, do not give it before discussing with pediatrician

my infant is showing signs of dehydration. when do i call the doctor? my baby has been ill and is having fewer wet diapers than normal. ive tried to give her pedialyte, but she isnt taking much of it. at what point do i need to call her pediatrician?

You : You should call your child's doctor if you see any signs of dehydration.  These signs are:

- dry mouth
-few or no tears when crying
-excessive fussiness
-fewer than 3-4 wet diapers/day
-no urination in 6-8 hours
-sunken soft spot
-dry, wrinkled or doughy skin
-appears weak or limp
-decreased alertness or increased sleepiness
-rapid breathing or fast heart rate

Pedialyte: Give him the same amount of pedialyte you would normally  give him in milk. That is about 5-6 ounces. Good luck!

None: Pedialyte is for vomiting more so than diarrhea. I do know pediatrician a that say it can make diarrhea worse.  Follow up with your pediatrician if it continues for a couple of days. If it resolves without intervention then don't sweat it. Make sure you continue to feed and keep you baby hydrated.

how much pedialyte should i give to my 10 month old son? (his pediatrician advised that he take some, but he didn't prescribe a dosage.)

It depends: It depends on the problem.  If your son has gastroenteritis ('stomach flu'), you need to keep offering Pedialyte in small frequent amounts to replace your son's losses from vomiting/diarrhea.
