hey i'm a final year med student, and i just noticed a patch in my beard near the angle of mandible, i've no past hx of any such issue, and no patches anywhere else on the body or scalp? what should i do? alopecia barbae or areata? thanks..

Unsure: Patch?  What kind?  Patch with absence of beard?  Change in color of hair in this area?  Less thick area of hair?  A photo would be very helpful.  Your thoughts may be correct but without photo tough to tell.  When you do (if you do derm rotation) you will learn that look (esp with magnification) and feel VERY important in making derm  dx.

Varies: Patchy hair loss can be due to alopecia areta an autoimmune condition. There are other conditions including infections that can also cause hair loss. These are commonly treatable things and I would suggest seeing a dermatologist to purse further treatment such as steroids. Hope this helps!

does growing a beard correlate to puberty? at 20 i just started growing a beard in patches. does that mean puberty hasn't finished for me yet?

Human growth and: development varies a great deal.  Please see an endocrinologist who may test your hormone levels to make sure everything is ok.  Your family doc can refer you if he/she thinks it is necessary.  Peace and good health.

trimmed beard at a salon. after 2 days, i see 4 small patches whr my beard is not growing. was it the trimmer? i usually shave at home with a razor.

Beard problem: Not sure if the barber used any chemical or just the way he shaved. This is not a common issue to be honest.

Alopecia: Your hair loss is concerning. Two of the top candidates would be a fungal infection of the hairs of the beard, and a thyroid problem could cause this.

Maybe alopecia areat: You could possibly have alopecia areata.  This is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system reacts to and rejects hair follicles, causing them to fall out.  There are treatments available, so you should see your doctor to establish a diagnosis, and be treated if possible.

This may: be patches of fungal infection! Scraping of the skin there with microscopic exam may disclose the "culprit" There are other skin disorders which can "present" this way, Consult your PCP (Primary Care Provider) who may wish to refer you to a Dermatologist!'
