Treats allergy: Patanol is an eyedrop used for the treatment of allergic conjunctivitis. some patients may experience irritation when taking it if they are sensitive to some of the preservatives. in general it is a safe and effective treatment for allergy in the eye.  if you are experiencing specific symptoms with this medication, then I suggest that you  ask about this specifically.

Couple answers:: Patanol (olopatadine) and artificial tears can be taken together but they counteract each other so it's pointless. Patanol (olopatadine) dries out your eyes, artificial tears are supposed to wet your eyes but don't work well anyway. If u have allergies and dry eyes, try a punctum plug to help your dry eyes, which helps with contacts too. Or a mild steroid drop like Alrex will treat both. But these can't be used with contacts.

See below: Patanol, (olopatadine) made by Alcon, is an eye drop with anti-histamine &amp; anti-cholinergic activity :good for allergies. Flarex is a steroid eye drop. I'm not an eye doctor, but my belief is that, while both are effective for perennial allergies, the former is safe while the latter is not. You can develop an eye infection which can be devastating and mask the signs with Flarex. How about cetirizine pills?

Yes.: They act through mast cell stabilization and have antihistaminic properties. They are not corticosteroid drops. They are not habit forming. They are generally used for as long as they are needed.

Yes: There are over the counter allergy drops and prescription ones as well! all work well to reduce or eliminate the four cardinal signs of ocular allergy - itching, redness, tearing and swelling. Most do not work quickly but all cause the eye to respond less to allergens. There are also mild steroid drops for those with severe allergies. These can be used together for added speed and effect.

Another consideration is a low-grade bacterial conjunctivitis, so visit an ophthalmologist trusted by your pediatrician.

No: Patanol (olopatadine) doesn't become less effective with use and tolerance doesn't develop. No medications used to treat allergies develop tolerance. This only occurs with a small number of meds, usually those affecting nervous system, e.g. Pain killers, sedatives, sleeping pills, etc. Probably you are being exposed to  more pollen, dust, etc. And your symptoms are worse.

Yes: Topical antihistamine agents are generally very effective for treatment of seasonal allergy eye conditions.  However, as the season progresses, they often lose their effect.  That does not make this "bad" medicine; rather, it probably attests to the severity of allergies that you have.
