Syncope vs sleep: Syncope = passing out.  Occurs because of lack of blood flow to head usually cardiac cause.  There is autonomic dysfunction that ensues.  Being asleep is a rapidly reversible state that can be controlled on whim with stimulation.  This simply does not happen when passed out.

Syncope is not sleep: Passing out or syncope is an abnormal loss of consciousness that often times cannot be predicted.  Sleep is a normal and required physiologic function of the human body.  If you are having syncopal events then you need to be seen by your physician.

"Passing out" is the colloquial term for what is medically known as "syncope" which occurs if, for whatever reason, the brain temporarily does not receive enough blood or oxygen.

my 14 day old baby doesn't wake up during the night for his feed.
sometimes 5 hours will pass and still asleep. 
what should i do?

Enjoy the rest: Some babies can and do get by without night feeds. If he makes up for it during the day &amp; is growing /filling out, leave him alone. I don't wake to feed in healthy babies unless it has been more than 8 hours.

after having my wisdom teeth removed(today). when i fall asleep, i wake up gasping for air. will this pass? it's quite terrifying.

Need supervision: The only reason that I can think of for having breathing issues following wisdom teeth removal is narcotic use. If you can breathe normally and don't have any throat swelling, be careful with narcotic dosage. This can decrease your drive to breathe normally. If you've taken narcotics and are sleepy, make sure someone is with you and can monitor your breathing.

my 12 year old daughter just had these symptoms .... feeling faint, about to pass out. no feeling in her legs. didn't know if she was awake or asleep ?

Do not know but: I would get her checked out tonight. I cannot say this is benign problem although it could be. If she was highly emotional or distraught this could be related to anxiety.
The ER visit tonight will most likely rule out anything urgent that needs dealt with tonight.

Might be the dose: First off, wine is not an aphrodisiac. The reason people drink it is to reduce anxiety and inhibitions. And like most things that reduce anxiety, it has a lot more affects than just reducing anxiety, it reduces alertness, makes you sleepy, etcetera. However, if it seems to work at first and then you fall asleep, try taking less. Realize that you are balancing reducing anxiety and reducing energy.
