Occasionally, a small stone may exit the gallbladder and get stuck into the (common) bile duct where it can then 'pass' into the intestine.  Either way, it is the obstruction that causes the pain.

If gallstones are symptomatic you may need to remove your gallbladder surgically (cholecystectomy).
