They sit behind the thyroid and share some of the same blood supply, but have a totally different function than the thyroid.Hyperparathyroidism is relatively common and is picked up when the calcium levels in your body are high. It can cause kidney stones, bone pain, fatigue, memory loss, and probably cardiovascular diseas.

Depends.: Depends upon why your PTH is elevated.  This could be a normal  response to a variety of metabolic and hormonal conditions. Too complicated to explain here.  You should talk with the doc who measured this.

Stones, bones,groans: For hyperparathyroidsim (causing high calcium) we learn in medical school: stones, bones, groans and psychiatric overtones.  This means kidney stones, bone weakness and pain, abdominal pain (groans) and depression, memory issues, etc.  You are diagnosed by having high blood calcium with high parathyroid hormone levels.  Treatment is usually outpatient surgery.

Endocrinologist: See your endocrinologist immediately! hypoparathyroidism is not common, except after thyroid surgery, but is treatable to keep calcium level normal.

Easy to test for: Hi. The key things to test for are: blood calcium, blood phosphate, kidney function, vitamin D levels, PTH, and 24-hour urinary calcium. If your blood calcium, urinary calcium, &amp; PTH are high, you have primary hyperparathyroidism (HPT). If blood calcium is low or normal and PTH is high, you have secondary HPT. If blood calcium and PTH are low, you have hypoparathyroidism. Kidney disease caveats.

PTH: High PTH can lead to high calcium which causes effects like kidney stones, abdominal pain, muscle aches, frequent urination, and depression/anxiety/memory.

Low PTH can lead to low calcium can cause numbness and tingling as well as muscle spasm.

Yes: Depends on what the problem is but the most common problem is overproduction of parathyroid hormone due to a growth.   There are treatment options.  Surgery will typically cure it.  Otherwise, a pill can be used to control it if surgery is not an option.  You can also inject alcohol into the gland to "ablate" it (not commonly done).

Common: It's commonly done with good success.  You have 4 of them but only need half of one gland to survive.  You remove the gland if there is a growth on it or if they are producing too much parathyroid hormone.

Different glands: They are different glands and do completely different things.  Although they share part of the name, they are very different from one another.  The thyroid is located in the front of your neck and is responsible for thyroid hormone production and release.  It controls your metabolism.  The parathyroids is located behind the thyroid and is responsible for calcium regulation.
