Should not hurt : Pap smears are a proven way to reduce the chances of developing cervical cancer by early detection. Although vaginal pressure may be felt, it should not cause pain. If painful, the usual cause is vaginal tightening around the speculum. Try to keep the vaginal area tense-free for a "painless" pap.

You're not the first: Docs have special equipment to that permit this to be done without disturbing your hymen. You may be uncomfortable asking but talk with the clinic nurse/staff   and share your concern.Your concerns can easily be incorporated in your care.

Need to examine: Neither the smear process nor the speculum should resulting in pain lasting a week. It is not feasible to provide a meaningful opinion without additional history, physical examination and may be some tests. It would be prudent to see your doctor.

Vaginismus: Sorr to hear of your vaginismus (pain preventing vaginal penetration). Good for you for wanting and recognizing need for pap smear. Find a gynecologist you trus and  follow her advice. Properly done by a careful and sensitive examiner might allow speculum insertion without too much discomfort. Valium (or a similar but shorter acting sedative) might help; your doctor will know. Not to worry.: Women and girls may be judged by their happiness, their friendliness, and many other wonderful traits, but not by the condition of their hymens. It makes absolutely no difference whether a person has a big hymen, little hymen, broken hymen, unbroken hymen, etc... One need not worry about hymens when seeing her doctor, as it cannot matter in a free, modern, equitable society.

Sedation: Please mention your concerns to your doctor and s/he may sedate you and ensure proper pain relief. Do not forgo the needed medical examination.
For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form.
