Should not hurt : Pap smears are a proven way to reduce the chances of developing cervical cancer by early detection. Although vaginal pressure may be felt, it should not cause pain. If painful, the usual cause is vaginal tightening around the speculum. Try to keep the vaginal area tense-free for a "painless" pap.
