hi.. i'm taking esomeprazole 40mg twice daily and mine is finished still waiting for the pharmacy to order mine.. took last dose of 40mg last night.. can i take pantoprazole in the mean time and go back to esomeprazole tomorrow?

Yes: These are both proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), so they work similarly.  I have had patients switch from Pantoprazole to esomeprazole the next day, and then switch back to pantoprazole on occasion. It is a good idea to wean off PPIs as soon as you can. They are safe for short term use, however long term use may cause problems, so once you are feeling better ask your Dr about weaning off of it.

Prilosec: Takes longer to exert its effect than antacids, need to wait several days and see.

80 mg/day: Except for unusual cases the maximum recommended dose is 80 mg/day.  Discuss with your doctor if you still have symptoms.

GERD: Your pain may be due to gastroesophageal reflux. See your doctor or a gastroenterologist for help.

May be timing: Make sure you are taking your pantoprazole correctly.  This brand of proton pump inhibitor needs to be taken about 1/2 - 1 hour before a meal.  This makes it most effective.
