Maybe: It depends on why you're taking pancrease (pancrelipase).  If it's because your pancreas does not make enough pancrease (pancrelipase) on its own (pancreatic exocrine insufficiency), then you may also be deficient in lipase, so a combination of the two may be good for your condition. No: If you have no residual deficit and no change in your parkinson's symptoms, then you don't have to change your meds.

Gagging: I am concerned that she is having swallowing problems. The best way to check this is a barium swallow study to see if she aspirated fluids into the lung when she swallow. An ENT doctor would be a good person to help you.

Elderly patients: There are many reasons for your mother to have a change in behavior.  I would strongly consider infection (uti, uri, pneumonia) and medications as potential causes.  Some blood tests, urinalysis and possibly and x-ray can help answer these questions.  Good luck!

Any symptoms?: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, your level is normal.

No: However, transplant of small cellular components of the pancreas which make the insulin, called islets, are done in a few experimental centers around the country.  In addition, some patients can do well with an external artificial Insulin pump which delivers Insulin over a two day period and has to be adjusted less frequently than given Insulin shots.

Yes: Although the causes are multifactorial and sometimes poorly understood, there is a hereditary component.  Keep in mind, that even though a parent may have it, it does not mean that it will be necessarily passed on.  The tendency, however, may be there.

Likely not: Nph is a problem with flow of cerebrospinal fluid, and is associated with cognitive loss, apractic gait, and urinary lack of control.  Parkinson's in contrast demonstrates a tremor at rest, increased muscle tone and different short strepped gait.  Talk to your doctor, if the meds do not benefit you, as other diagnoses might be present.

can you tell me in parkinson's disease, does dopamine loss occur merely in the striatum or does it occur in the s.niagra too?

Pigmented nuclei: The dopamine loss involves predominantly the basal ganglia area, but also involves dorsal vagal nucleus, substantial nigra, and areas of any dopamine interaction within brain and brain stem.  But, to be complete, Parkinson's is a multi-neurotransmitter degenerative deficiency syndrome with other neurotransmitter systems involved.
