i am getting shooting hurting pains in my rib cages- it feels like the ribs not any deeper... no recent physical injury... possibilities?

Maybe inflammation: It could be costochondritis w/ pain ; tenderness at the cartilaginous joints where your ribs ; breastbone meet. Sometimes swelling ; inflammation may occur. You should get evaluated to make sure it is nothing more serious such as a heart condition, lung problem, autoimmune disorder, or other illness.

Talk to PCP: The causes of pain you described are usually from acid reflux, muscle pain, costocondritis and rarely from GB stone. As the information is incomplete and as you are young this is unlikely from heart or lung origin. Try anti-acid and anti-inflammatory measures. If ineffective talk to your PCP.

Unlikely: Unlikely fracture as clear cut trauma usually required. More likely costochondritis. Heat beneficial as are otc antinflamatories. If persists see physician.

Pleuritic Pain?: Call and speak with your doctor, schedule a visit today and get checked. Your doctor may order some X-rays. Ibuprofen or Naproxen will help if you're not allergic to such medications. Go to the ER if the pain gets worse or if you develop difficulty with breathing.

Based on this information, he/she will be able to tell you what's wrong and what to do about it.

GOOD IDEA: Many organs there. On the right=liver, gall bladder, duodenum ; hepatic flexure of the colon. Mid=stomach, duodenum, ; left = spleen, stomach, pancreas, splenic flexure of the colon. So there are many possible problems that can b possible. A hands on exam ; proper labs r needed 2 make a diagnosis.

Strain?: Did you lift or strain?  This can cause rib/side pains.  Are you coughing or short of breath?  Think of bronchitis or pneumonia.  Are you having nausea, stomach pain or upper back pain?  Could be gallbladder.  As you can see, there are many possible causes.  Use moist heat on the area and take Advil or Tylenol, (acetaminophen)  if no better in a couple of days or symptoms worsen, see your doctor.  Good luck!
