Probably not.: If the tag is big enough to cause a "firm lump", it's not something you can handle yourself; and there's no way to reach it anyway! let a doctor take care of it.

Perianal abscess: It could be an external hemorrhoid, infected hemorrhoid or a perianal abscess. If you can get to your GP have them examine you and they may be able to incise and drain it in the office. You'll feel much better and will be prescribed antibiotics.

You may have abscess: You may a pilonidal abscess or a thrombosed hemorrhoid. If the swellinig is at the rectal opening then it could be blood clot in your hemorrhoid or perianal abscess. You may require drainage of the abscess. If your swelling is over your tailbone it will also need drainage.

Rectal lump: You may have a cyst or abscess. You can try sitting in warm water to allow the inflammation to subside and for the lump to come to a head and rupture.  Unless you have someone to examine the site for you or use a mirror or if you are able to crane your neck enough to see the site, self treatment might be awkward.  Go see the campus medical department.

Probably an: External hemorrhoid that thrombosed or clotted and now has ulcerated and as the clot dissolves, old blood is released. Could also be an abscess or fistula. If in doubt see your regular doctor to have it checked out.

See: A GI specialist. Try high fiber soft diet, drink plenty of fluids and increase activity level. Your GI May place you on stool softener, laxatives and or suppository or rectal manual stool evacuation if indicated
