i have pain in the left knee just above the knee cap, but only when sitting or laying down. walking/ weight bearing makes it feel better. makes no sen?

Patellofemoral pain?: This could be pain from the patellofemoral joint as it's under greater stress when the knee is flexed, particularly when sitting. Quadriceps tendinitis is possible but less likely. Finally, nerve pain referred from the low back can present on the front of the knee and discs are under greater stress when sitting. bumped knee below knee cap. now have worsening pain when bending or attempting weight bearing. no swelling. whole leg aches?

Contusion: If this just occurred in recent days, you most likely have a contusion of the patellar tendon, infrapatellar fat pad or simply the soft tissues on the front of the knee. This tends to be a very sensitive area that is under tension when the knee bends Consider limiting painful activities, ice for 20 minutes 3-5x/day, and use ibuprofen/naproxen to relieve inflammation. See a doc if not improving.

sharp pain around right knee shooting down leg when crossing it. patella doesn't hurt. full weight bearing and strength. not swollen either.

Meniscus injury: An injury to the meniscus can lead to pain when applying pressure to the inside of the knee while crossing the legs this can be aggravated. Although usually there is swelling of the knee sometimes you'll only get pain and not much swelling. If regularanti-inflammatories and ice or not helping then it is necessary to obtain consultation with an orthopedic specialist.

Orthopedic eval: You should see an orthopedist.  A pop sound and impaired ability to bear weight are suspicious for a soft tissue injury to the ligaments or tendons in the knee.  In the short term, you can ice it, elevate it, compress it with an ace wrap, and take some Motrin or advil (ibuprofen).

Get evaluated: Patello-femoral knee pain can have multiple causes including but not limited to trauma, infection, and neoplasm.  Knee pain is very common and some rest, NSAIDS, and therapy are usually helpful. A thorough history and physical followed by diagnostic imaging can help get the answers and treatment you might need. Your fall a few years ago may have caused a bone contusion or cartilage injury.

Usually yes: Assuming that you have no other injuries to the knee, you should be able to bear weight after this injury.

See below: Could be something wrong with the medial of your right knee such as oa, meniscal tear/ligament tear.  You may need imaging to better determine what is going on.

Disk herniation: There are a few  things that may cause your symptoms that may not be related to your knees, like a disk herniation in your low back.  You should get a musculoskeletal / neurological evaluation by your healthcare provider.  Good luck.

wifes got bad left knee, (cap twisted 90 degrees 2 left when she was 25). is there a way to repair this. she's 41, 17st & wants 2 exercise/lose weight?

Rehab or surgery: If patella is dislocating repeatedly, then she should have surgery to correct. If she has anterior knee pain, then she needs to rehabilitate appropriately. Core, hip and knee exercises and avoid deep knee flexion angles. If doing squats or lunges never bend more than 45 deg, or better yet, do isometric squats (wall sits) and lunges (scissor lunges).

Clinic: If you have no insurance, call the closest medical school clinic. Usually listed under a university name.  Ask receptionist for name of the walk-in clinic or their general medical clinic. Then call the clinic and explain you are uninsured. Most likely they have a volunteer no cost clinic. You have arthritis or knee injury and need to be seen. If all fails, go to er -- they cannot turn you away.
