im 22 i am 5 months post partum . my stool has been hard and there has been bleeding and discomfort when im using the restroom but no other pain. poop is a normal brown color . what could this be?

: "Hard stools" result in straining, which can cause hemorrhoids or even injury to the lining of the colon, either of which will result in bleeding.  If you are nursing, lack of fluid replenishment will cause mild dehydration, which can cause "hard stools".  Increase your fluid intake, and if the bleeding continues, see a GI physician for consultation.

how do i know if painfull cramps and pain pooping are from ibs or something else wrong in the colon?

It's in the details: Painful abdominal cramping may be from specific food sensitivities or true ibs. Pain with defacation could be from constipation. Usually, ibs pain is relieved somewhat with bowel evacuation, only it is quite often if you have the type associated with diarrhea rather than constipation. Talk out some of the details with your family doc -- you may need the opinion or scoping evaluation from a GI doc.

Abnormal: Your symptoms need to be further investigated with a full history, full exam/ rectal exam and further consideration for blood work and tests, such as colonoscopy. Take a stool softener so that the consistency of your stools remains soft. Family history is also important for extended family and age they developed cancer as well as type of cancer. Best will be to start with your doc.

Pain is not internal: Internal hemorrhoids usually present as painless bleeding. Pain in the anus with a bowel movement is usually due to an anal fissure, with sharp tearing pain during a bm , and variable spasm pain after the bm. If you are having painful bm's, it is best to be examined by a colorectal surgeon and learn of options available to treat this.

Probably not: It is not clear from your question where you have pain but generally if it only occurs with your menstrual periods, it is likely either due to irritable bowel or perhaps endometriosis.  You should discuss this with your primary doctor or gynecologist.

Brown OK: Dark brown is fine. It means that it is moving slowly and is absorbing a lot of bile to give it its color. If it is dark black and tarry- that would be a concern or if bright red blood is noticed that would require attention. As long as there is no pain and its color is dark brown- that is normal.

: I would consider an evaluation for a hernia or for swelling of the blood vessels around the testicles (vericocele). You may need a referral to a urologist to evaluate for these.

May be hemorrhoids: often hemorrhoids can cause this sensation.  hard stools can  make the problem worse.  if you are experiencing constipation, it is a good idea to increase hydration and fiber in your diet.  with persistent pain, you need physical exam.

Mucus &amp; more...: Mucus occurs in up to 50% of patients with irritable bowel syndrome, with or without pain. Mucus may also be produced due to partial obstruction, chronic constipation/stool impaction, rectal dysfunction, infection, &amp; even from secretory villous rectal tumors. No bleeding, weight loss, fever, tenderness...Right?  Call your doc to get checked.
