constant numbness under my left kneecap and also outer side of left lower leg (around kneecap area extending down) for 9 days. neuro exam showed hyperreflexia all tendon groups, normal brain mri. referred to a neurologist. what are possible causes?

: Causes of numbness include nerve damage, nerve compression (either localized or at spine exit), demyelination syndromes, and several other neurological syndromes. A full neurological exam and specific nerve conduction studies may help to localize the problem. General antiinflammatories may also help in the short term.

i have a bruiise on my lower leg that has a raised edge on one side. it has been there for several weeks, it does not hurt but won't go away.

Not normal: A bruise with a raised edge persisting for more than a few weeks is not normal.  This symptom would suggest thatr it is still bleeding inside or  that some other tissues (muscle or fascia) may have been disrupted.  You need to get it checked by your doctor

See a osteopathic DR: If you have hip pain, and knee pain too on both sides of your body, and low back pain, it would be a very good idea to see osteopathic physician, who can evaluate, and treat you and offer solutions. You may need imaging if it's severe. If not, s/he can get you out of pain, and provide immediate relief quickly. It will depend on your medical, trauma, social, dietary history.

Tendon or vein: In that area, either the peroneus brevis or longus tendon can be inflamed or damaged and can cause such findings.  Even though you state it is not the vein, a venous ultrasound Doppler is needed to rule out phlebitis or a venous blood clot.

my 4yr old daughter has had to have 3 xrays in 9mths. they were 2 lower leg and one left side chest. i have since read this increases her risk of getting certain cancers. is this true it was never stated by the dr at the time i am very scared?

Minuscule risk: The amount of radiation that you are exposed to from routine simple xrays is so minuscule that it really is not even worth mentioning. I would not worry about this tiny amount of exposure.  On the other hand, if someone suggests a CT scan study of a child, you do need to weigh the risk, as one CT Scan is about the same as 2,000 chest xrays. Don't worry about those tiny amounts.

The back pain could arise from your kidneys, rib cage, spine or hip and pelvic joints. It could be due to inflammation from an old injury, arthritis or disc pain, hip bursitis, kidney stones - the possibilities are endless. You need to see your doctor

Swelling : What side of your ankle is swollen and where exactly are the blisters or patches of redness?  If you sprained your ankle, the swelling is natural and just your body response.   The blisters may be due the severe swelling or allergic reaction to any compression applied.  It may also be related to some type of skin reaction to creams.  Blisters are unusual and may indicate a more severe injury.

what are the indications of lower leg compartment syndrome on t1 ax/t2 ax fat sat mri? white outline seems to be very thin on one side.

Accepted Answer

Probably not: a great idea to interpret an MRI without any training based on a 400 word or less response.  Compartment syndrome is a clinical diagnosis, but supportive MRI findings would include edema (bright on T2W) involving the musculature and deep soft tissues.  Best to speak with your doctor about the results.
