hey there, i went skiing yesterday and ended up skipping on ice and twisting my knee. there is no swelling or bruising. the pain is on the right side of my knee cap and hurts to extend. not sure if its just a sprain or meniscus tear?

Conservative : Use ice, elevation, immobilization, even an OTC knee sleeve, and give it a few days, BUT if persistent symptoms, best to have checked out by orthopedic surgeon.

Quadriceps Strain: Quadriceps femoris muscle group is Latin for "four headed muscle of the femur". It is one of the most important muscle groups contributing to upright stance and human locomotion. Located in front of the thigh, vastus laterals, medialis and intermedium extend the knee as rectus femoris flexes the hip. Quads attach to the knee cap and when strained in explosive kicking sports cause pain and spasm.

Patellofemoral pain: Your symptoms are characteristic of ' chondromalacia of the patella' or kneecap pain.Pain can occur from actual softening of the kneecap cartilage, tendinitis, instability of the kneecap or malalignment of your lower extremity( or a combination of the above). Rest, nsaids and isometric quad strengthening w/ hamstring stretching would be recommended initially. See your ors if symptoms continue. Gl!

See below: Could be something wrong with the medial of your right knee such as oa, meniscal tear/ligament tear.  You may need imaging to better determine what is going on.

Knee pain: Could be.Do you have a patellar click when Dr. examines you. If so you have fluid on your knee and can be many causes.

Prepatellar bursitis: Sounds like prepatellar bursitis. This may be from a minor injury or may occur spontaneously.  Rest, ice, and anti-inflammatories are the mainstays of treatment for this condition.  If your occupation requires kneeling consider wearing occupational kneepads.

The shoe not 4 U: This may not b the 1 4 u. Most major running shoe stores will allow u 2 return the shoes. This just may not b the best 4 u. They do alter ur gait to some degree & this slight change in ur gait now is causing the problem. I bought shoes @ scheels, cost was about $ 120 and after about 4 months of not much use, they gave me a credit 4 $ 100 towards a new pair. I would c what u can do. Good luck!

No: If your doctor says it is normal, you should believe him.

Chondromalacia: Damage under the knee cap can cause this 

sometimes arthroscopic surgery can be helpful for those types of problems

most joint problems seem to hurt worse when it is cold.
