i'm experiencing side head pain when i push my ear tragus down, what could this be?

Nerve connections: Your tragus is primarily cartilage which is innervated by a branch of your trigeminal nerve which continues up the side of your head. Any inflammation in this area or pressure points to the tragus can cause "referred" pain because of the anatomical connection. Pain which persists more than 5-7 days in the same area should be evaluated by an ENT doctor.

External otitis: Inflammation or infection external ear canal can cause tender tragus. Otc pain pilla and topical ear drop can take care of this . See your doctor.

TMJ Dysfunction: You may have either an infection of the tragus or inflammation of the jaw joint which is just underneath the tragus.  Seek the attention of an otolaryngologist.  He/she will be able to differentiate the cause for you.

Doctor Exam: It might be an inflammation of the hair follicles, or something in your ear canal.  Additionally, it might be TMJ.  Best recommendation would be to see your doctor and have an examination.

Infection?: You may have a slight cellulitis on the area possibly from head phones or scratching the area. Any infected piercing there? I would have it examined start warm soaks but see a doctor asap because you may need an antibiotic or drainage if its infected. IT would not affect your hearing at this stage

Need exam: Your symptoms sound like you might have temporomandibular joint pain dysfunction or TMD.  If you can pinch your nose and pop your ears, you should be okay to fly, but you should have someone check you for TMD as this is a very common disorder and it's very treatable. Cyst: Probably an old acne cyst. A dermatologist can evaluate it and remove it if you wish.
