Chest pain: Pain that comes on while taking a breath is often pleuritic in nature or something that irritates the lung lining.  This could be a pneumonia, pulmonary embolus or a vial process that irritates the pleura.

? costochondritis: This is an inflamation of your rib joints as they join your sternum (breast bone). Common in young women. It hurts to take a deep breath because that is when those joints move. If significant pain, youcan take Ibuprofen and use a heating pad.

Get checked.: This has been going on too long. Get checked, pneumonia can have these symptoms, among other things.  Get seen and evaluated today!  Better safe than sorry!

Pleuritic chest pain: The causes are many and range from relatively innocuous to life threatening conditions.

Unlikely: Though a chest xray is not the most reliable test for a collapsed lung (pneumothorax) it is pretty good. If there is a viral pneumonia on xray that could cause your symptoms.

Reassurance: Chest pain that occurs with a deep breath is generally not of cardiac origin. If you have a past history of lung disease, pneumonia, pleurisy, or other conditions, your symptoms can be residual from that. You may also have musculoskeletal strain that is causing this pain with a deep breath. It possible that you would have a disease like pericarditis, but that is less likely.

Check it with dr: Chest pain in children can be as simple as muscle cramping in the chest wall, minor injury during activity, etc but could also be from asthma, pneumonia, heartburn, or other health issues.  Heart-related chest pain at twelve is thankfully very rare, but not impossible.  There is likely a solution, and when you know the answer, your child and you will feel better.

most serious cause to consider is pulmonary embolism, very serious
