Depends: If you are having pain in the mid back and/or rib cage area, you should contact your primary doctor. If the pain is severe or if you feel winded (cannot catch your breath), consider going to the nearest emergency room or urgent care center.

To figure out pain..: To figure out pain that happens only with deep breaths, one has to write down on a big calendar: when it happens, exactly what happens, what makes it worse, what makes it better, what food/drink/meds he took that day, what activities/sports he did that day, etc... Take the diary to the dr. With 3 weeks of data for evaluation. It could be the pleura (the lining), ribs, spine, nearby nerves, etc...

See doctor: It does not sound normal.  Shortness of breath can be caused by many conditions, some are serious. Being overweight, heart failure, lung conditions like COPD-are just some examples.

what is causing back pain only when leaning to left and taking deep breath?

Hard to say.: If you reproduce this symptom with this particular movement or maneuver, then you are more than likely creating a mechanical problem with bone, ligament or nerve involvement causing your pain.  See your pcp for an exam if this is more than a nuissance.

Chest pain: Pain that comes on while taking a breath is often pleuritic in nature or something that irritates the lung lining.  This could be a pneumonia, pulmonary embolus or a vial process that irritates the pleura.

i feel pain in middle/upper back and chest when coughing, taking deep breath. no flue symptoms.
what could it be?

Pleurisy: Can be based on lung problem or simply INTERCOSTAL MUSCE Pull ( The small muscles in between the ribs)
A chest x ray is in order and you should see your Primary Care Provider for the results of that film and appropriate treatment!

started working out. today sudden upper left back pain when taking deep breath and now hurts when i move/walk. what could it be?

Muscle strain: you probably have a muscle strain and spasm from working out  It can be painful and sharp  It does hurt more with movement  Rest it, moist heat, and some advil (ibuprofen)  If you get shortness of breath or increased chest pain then followup with ER but I feel that it is just a muscle strain at your age

Musculo-skletal: pain. Intercostal pain medication injection to the area may help. May need a chest x-ray to rule out pleuresy.

my dad is 66 yrs old,he got angiogram & angioplasty done 6 days back & got 3 stents for 3 blockage which were 100%,90% &90%.he seemed normal 3 days back but from yesterday he has tiredness and feels difficulty taking deep breath.why is this happening?

Physician hospital: Please see your physician for an EKG and possibly a chest radiograph. Post procedure fatigue is common and there may be chest wall muscular tenderness, but it is important to consider cardiac causes.
