Pinched nerve neck?: Compression of the 6th cervical nerve as it exits the spinal column can cause shoulder pain and tingling(paresthesias) in the thumb. The discomfort will often radiate down the arm. The compression can be due to a bulging or herniated disc in the spine, among other causes. To see if your problem is due to nerve compression, or something else, you should see your physician for an exam.

Your doctor will think about common conditions, but also thoracic outlet syndrome and other conditions that can affect the upper brachial plexus. Thoracic outlet synd: Very unlikely. Tos typically effects the 5th finger not the thumb. Your symptoms are more consistent with a C6 radiculopathy (pinched nerve) at the neck. You should see your doctor for verification.

: If an anesthesiologist performed a brachial plexus (interscalene, supraclavicular, infraclavicular, or axillary) block, it would be a potential source of your pain from hematoma formation or direct injury. Another possibility could be a pressure point if there wasn't enough padding in an extended procedure. These should resolve, but may need physical therapy. See your surgeon or anesthesiologist.

Some ideas: Carpel Tunnel Syndrome can give hand and shoulder symptoms- usually more symptomatic at night.   With trauma you can injure your neck and have referred pain that you feel in shoulder and hand.  It is a common combination for those who suffer paralysis from a stroke - but not usual in someone your age.  You will need a Neurologist or Physical Medicine Doctor to sort it out if it persists- Good luck

See your doctor: Since you are now having trouble picking things up, you really should see a doctor.  Shoulder pain can be very debilitating in and of itself, but you may in fact be having nerve damage from your neck that is causing both your shoulder to hurt and weakness in your arm or hand.  If you are having true weakness, this is rather urgent. Once you have nerve damage, sometimes function does not return.
