i slid down a steep cliff near the beach and the next day after walking about a mile my foot below the ankle bone on the outside was excruciating. the next day there was a pinkish purple bruise on the side of my foot and a little swelling but didn't hurt

Ankle sprain.: Sounds like a minor sprain.  So long as you are able to bear weight on it, I would not be too concerned.  Rest, ice, ACE wrap compression, and elevation should reduce any discomfort you might experience.

Tendonitis possibly.: See a doctor for a proper evaluation.  X-rays may be necessary.

Strange symptom : However stress can cause many unusual symptoms, if otherwise no other problem, that would be of no concern , unless really bothersome or progressed , wish you well

Sprain/tendonitis: A sprain is common in the lateral ankle area however peroneal tendonitis can happen too. There are, of course, other reasons however maybe your doctor can pinpoint the reason for your pain anatomically.

Effusion: It sound like you have an effusion in your ankle. Previous trauma? Swelling in the joint or in the surrounding tissues of your ankle? A painless swollen monoarthritis should be investigated w/full exam to see if you have any infection rheumatological sx or diabetes, may progress to polyarthritis. X-rays and joint aspiration may be needed. You will need to rest , ice, elevate and compress ankle.

See a foot : And ankle doc. You need to be evaluated to see extent of the damage. Is there ligament damage? Is there a talar dome injury etc.....

Tendon injury: Like injury to one of the peroneal tendons or calcaneal fibular ligament. Try rice or rest ice, compression and elevation and see local podiatrist.

NOT TRUE: No that is not true.  If you squeeze hard enough -you will have slight pain- it does not mean you are pregnant-it just means you squeeze it hard enough to cause pain. That is all.
