Musculoskeletal pain: Usually associated with pulled muscle or more rarely a rib fracture can hurt with cough, sneeze or deep breathing. Chest pain...: This could be a musculoskeletal pain that happens after a workout or a sudden movement . If this is associated with a cough, shortness of breath or fever, i would recommend having a chest xray to exclude some lung diseases like pneumonia, pleural effusion...Etc.

Get checked out: It coiuld be a sprain or a fractured rib or some other internal injury to the lungs. You need to be seen by a doctor.

Musculoskeletal: Most likely the pain is attributable to muscle aches  or tendonitis from excessive coughing. If the cause of the cough has not been determined, please see your PCP.
Provide local heat and use Motrin to control pain, until your PCP provides you with additional management.

Tough: How long has problem occurred ?  Could be many causes.  Early shingles, spasms between ribs, irritation  at rib/cartilage junction, something going on in lung base, somatic (muscles and connective tissue).  You are going to need to get this one checked out.

i have copd and cough all the time due to this i now have a rather large hernia on my left side over my rib cage. when i cough i feel like i am being stabbed and it is quite painful to the touch. help?

See a surgeon: If you truly have a hernia it sounds as if it may need surgical correction.   Do this quickly.  A viscus may become entrapped in the hernia and create a potentially life-threatening situation.  Hope you improve quickly.

Sounds muscles: Muscle sprain of your chest/abdominal wall can cause this, warm compresses and pain killers, unless contraindicated, if no improvement see your doctor, good luck

Post Viral : After coughing for a period of time, the rib cage muscles may become sore. Musculoskeletal pain may be treated with local heat and Ibuprofen. If there is recurrent or persistent infection, please see your physician for worsening fever or cough. Drink fluids,rest and if the cough lingers for more than two weeks, please see your physician.
