Surgery on septum: Septoplasty is a surgery that is used to improve the nasal airway.  This may consist of removing deviated portions of the septum, straightening some of the deviations or replacing portions of the deviated septum.  The surgery is usually done via an endonasal (inside the nose) approach.

Varies by region: Septoplasty is generally a limited procedure but is usually performed under general anesthesia.  Most of the costs are associated with the anesthesia and the ambulatory surgery center.  These costs can vary widely based on where you live.  You can contact your insurance company directly, or your surgeon for cost figures.

A good exam: There is no "test" to  determine if a septoplasty is appropriate.  A good history and a good physical exam is required.  I generally look for someone who has a fixed obstruction, that is, they are always clogged on one side, independent of allergies, infections, etc.  And when i actually look in, the septum significantly deviates to that side. It's these patients that i know will do great with surg.

Usually: Obviously you should have an exam that suggests the benefit of the surgery. No major health issues. Not usually recommended for pediatric patients.

Adult nose size: You should wait until the nose is adult size - around 14 for females, perhaps 16 for most males.

15-17 years old: The nose and face should achieve a mature, adult appearance before septoplasty.  The growth centers of the nose are located in the septum, and surgery can disrupt them if performed too early.  Typically, surgery is not done before age 15 (girls) or 17 (boys).

Depends: I would need to know why they are doing the septoplasty. 

For example, septoplasty indications include bleeding, sinus ostium blockage, trauma, cosmetic results, or surgical access to the pituitary. It's an excellent question for your surgeon.
