Tough one: Chronic visceral pain is difficult.  The 2 most likely sources of pain are scar tissue and nerves.  There are some medications that are worth trying for the nerve pain such as amitryptilline.  No medication that I'm aware of is helpful for scar tissue.  It's probably best to focus on relaxation techniques, alternative therapies (accupuncture), gentle massage or stretching, meditation/prayer.

Depends on liver : Depends on which part of the liver, how much liver, and how much liver is available for reserve. Given that all of those are minor, there is liver in reserve, and it isn't a major resection, risk of death is around 1-3%.

Accepted Answer

Yes: Depends on why the surgery is being performed. Cancer surgery has an about 25% survival over 5 years. Other conditions such as large cysts or infections can have a full normal life. Also some people will donate a portion of their liver for living donor liver transplant, and the donor of a portion of their liver has a normal life expectancy too.

i had a liver resection 4 weeks ago. my right lobe was removed with a big tumour that had grown inside it. how long should liver take to regenerate?

Depends.: The answer depends mostly on how much of the liver was removed and whether the remaining liver has underlying liver disease, such as viral hepatitis. Most patients begin healing within 10 days and have a complete restoration of normal liver size within 3-6 months, if there are no complications. Every patient is different, however. Good luck.

Few and small: Generally speaking, people with fewer (3 or less) and smaller tumors, with disease only in the liver will be candidates for these therapies, with resection generally preferred. This decision is usually made after discussion between the oncologist, liver surgeon and interventional radiologist.

is it normal for a type 1 diabetic to have high/low swings in sugar levels 5mos after liver resection?

Brittle: Type 1 insulin dependent diabetes is often brittle with swings in blood sugars at times without rhyme or reason. The liver does play an important role in glucose metabolism, but I doubt that partial resection of the liver is a major cause of the blood sugar swings. A diabetologist or endocrinologist is better qualified to answer your question. Addition of some of the newer diabetic meds may help.

what is the prognosis of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma when a liver resection is performed and stage 2?

Need additional info: In general extrahepatic cholangiocacinoma  do better than intrhepatic,   and  with neoadjuvant therapy ( chmo-radiatio )  followed by  liver transplantation 80% survival rate other wise over all results are not good, speak to the oncologist who knows more about the  case.

i recently had a liver resection to cut out ocular melanoma metastasis. what would you expect to be elevated in the blood work results 10 days out?

Many things: It would not be unexpected for many of the serum measurements to be out of normal limits.  Liver enzymes, obviously; but elecrtolytes as well as hemoglobin and hematocrit can be off due to intravenous supplementation.  It may take four to six week to normalize.

1mos post liver resection&gallbladder removal. platelets over 48hrs 472 to 75. wbc 13.4, anemic. what causes quick drop in platelet? is this a concern

Need more details: When did the platelet counts begin to fall in relation to the date of your surgery. What is the current level of Hemoglobin and platelets. If you have not had it checked recently get one. Once we know the current values of your CBC, we can guide you further. Internal bleeding can temporarily lower the platelet count but it should not occur one month after surgery. So something is amiss.
