Good genes: and good luck.  And for every 126 year old you can find that smokes I'll show you 100,000 people that died miserable deaths prematurely.  Do yourself a favor....don't smoke.

Possibly : First, great that you are quitting. Yes you will decrease the likelihood that you will have lung problems by stopping. However it will never go to zero as you smoked for almost a decade.

Fat chance: Smoking causes many adverse health effects especially on the lungs even if you don't have symptoms. This is one of the most poisonous substances you can introduce into your system and thus smoking &amp; health is an oxymoron.

Smoking and cancer: The longer the time you smoke and the amount of smoking you do determines your risk of dying of cancer.  If you stop now, you will not have a very much higher risk of cancer.  No one knows when any one individual is going to die.  It certainly is wise to stop smoking now.

Smoking: Your doctor can test your lung capacity but more importantly, the sooner you become smoke free the better.  It will lower, but not completely remove, the risk of illness and poor quality of life and finances due to smoking.  Check w/your doctor or local hospital for a smoking cessation program referral. 1 week: Cotinine has a half life of 20 hours.  After 1 week it is gone from your system.  If you stopped smoking for 10 days your cotinine should be negative in urine.

It lowers fertility: Smoking does lower fertility in both men and women. In men, it affects sperm number and strength. Second-hand smoke also lowers fertility in women, so there should be zero smoking in the home or car (open windows don't work). Gradually cut down: The first step is to gradually cut down  one cigarette every two days .This may work if you are highly motivated. If that doesn't work  add a nicotine patch or  gum and follow the protocols advised with them. There are  some other medications which can be prescribed by your physician. The best method is usually to be in a smoking cessation program which may combine the above approach with support.

Nobody really knows: It is reasonable to assume that e-cigs will prove to be safer than combustible tobacco smoking, but the reality is that, at this point, there is little or no data. The smoke clearly contains less in the way of cancer-causing tars, but nobody really knows what the other ingredients - propylene glycol, oils, flavorings, additives etc- even are, let alone what they do in the long and short-term.
