Good thought: Synthetic oxytocin, pitocin, is only used intravenously to help with labor. The new mom should be making plenty of her own oxytocin. Being a new mom, and not getting enough sleep, can make it difficult to bond with a baby at first. This will come with time. If her feelings are intense, and do not improve, she should be seen by her doctor to see if she has postpartum depression.

No.: Oxytocin is produced in the pituitary gland. Recovering hormones from humans (or animals) is associated w/ many risks. So there is no good reason to attempt to extract from living or dead persons/animals. To my knowledge, this is not being done anywhere. Oxytocin is a relatively easy protein made in the lab w/ the identical Amino Acid sequence found naturally in human beings -& it works perfectly.

Main actions: aid w/ uterine contraction during labor & w/ release of breast milk. Excess can cause harder uterine contractions & stress the fetus.  Hyper secretion in non-pregnant /non-nursing female is rare & need endocrinology consultation.
