Treat congestion: You should treat your nasal congestion to help your sinuses clear out. If you have allergies, see an allergist and get tested and treated. An over the counter preparation called sinus buster also helps with sinus congestion, worth a try.

There are: a number of them. Sudafed is the most common. HOWEVER I note you are taking THYROID medication therefore I would check the use of ANY oral decongestant with your Health Care Provider!

Sinus drainage: For patients that present with constant sinus problems and no medications seem to help, i usually consider imaging - looking for polyps or other sinus anatomical problems.  I also like to get the input of an ENT (ear nose throat) doctor, and perhaps an allergist.  Best of luck to you!

Pain: As a year long allergy sufferer, i can understand this problem first hand. Post nasal drip is annoying to you and frustrating to treat for us. Please humidify te air you breathe at night and try to keep your nose from getting stuffed up an inflammed. It may take weeks to settle down.

Sinus drainage: It really depends...If your sinus drainage is not infected or excessive, you may very well not even notice it at all.  However, if it is infected or excessive or caused by allergies, you may certainly smell or even taste it.  If your mucous is also thick because of being a little dry, this can cause the mucous to collect into a mucous plug or ball and these, too, can be easier to smell or taste.

Cough clears mucous.: Your sinuses drain into the back of your throat. When you have a lot of mucous draining, your normal cough reflex is there to help keep the mucous out of your lower airway passages. This is why I usually don't recommend cough suppressants, unless it's during the night to help with sleep.

Cough due to sinus : You can use delsym for the cough. For the post nasal drip, try sudafed  1 to 2 tabs  three times a day. If you have high blood pressure try 1 pill instead of two.  Feel better!

how can you tell the difference in lpr or true sinus drainage?

Great question: This is a question my students and ENT residents ask all the time.  Sometimes the difference on exam is subtle.  They both can cause laryngeal edema, cobblestoning, hoarseness, & excess mucus.  Lpr patients may have a little more erythema and hyperactive gag than simple drainage.  If a patient has definite nasal allergies and LPR symptoms, it can be tough to differentiate. I may need to treat both.

Sinus drainage: It really depends on the cause.  If it is from a cold, otc meds are fine to use short-term.  If it's from allergies, antihistamines are the way to go.  For chronic sinus issues, there are prescription medications that work fairly well.  If you have concerns, see your doctor.
