See below: Most sinusitis will resolve without any specific treatment. Topical (neosynephrine 1% nasal drops or spray) or oral (pseudoephedrine 60 mgs.) decongestants and saline nasal sprays give symptomatic relief.  For severe or intractable infections appropriate antibiotic treatment is indicated.

Medications: Afrin nasal spray is the best medication for nasal congestion. It is also helpful for sinus and facial congestion.  It can only safely be taken for 3-4 days, then rebound congestion can occur.   Many patients fail to take advantage of this excellent med due to fear of side effects.  Sudafed is also helpful.  Nasal saline acts is very safe as has mild decongestant effect.

Sinus drainage: Always a good idea to discuss this with your family doctor.  Meanwhile you may try rinsing out your nose using a Neti Pot---google this for instructions.

Viral illness versus allergies: This time of the year you may have a viral illness or allergies' .. The symptoms could be the same. The low-grade fever may be due to nasal obstructions. I recommend you try some over-the-counter medications such as Zyrtec and over-the-counter nasal steroids , which will help reduce the swelling in the nasal lining. If this continues to be a problem over the next 3 to 4 days, I highly suggest your your PCP for further evaluation and treatment. I do not feel that you need antibiotics at the present time.

i've had sinus blockage for about 3 years. i've been taking over the counter meds that don't work and was given rx for nasal spray but still nothing. . . about a year ago i sneezed a small chunk of flesh out, after i though i had mucus in my nose that would not come out. i went in to immediate care and the flesh was dismissed. should i go be seen about nasal polyps? ive been tired, and sleepy and lacking energy because i cant breathe. what should i do?

ENT: Please see an ENT specialist who will be able to perform endoscopy. They can assess you for signs of polyps and inflammation. The underlying causes may include chronic allergic responses, infections and a sample may be obtained. Your PCP may order the CAP allergy panel for your area, or during a virtual HT consult.
