Why didn't Dr advise: You need to give weight-based, children's tylenol (acetaminophen) or children's Ibuprofen to help reduce discomfort and fever. If not controlled / if concerns, take to pediatrician / urgent care.

Not unless directed: By a medical provider. Many cases of tonsillitis are caused by viruses and do not require antibiotics for treatment.

Why: Tonsillitis is an infection caused by a virus, by  strep bacteria or by infectious mononucleosis. I doubt any sexual partner would want oral sex from you while you still have an active infection in your throat. Antibiotic treatment has to be completed to eradicate strep&amp; they don't cure the other 2 causes of tonsillitis. Wait until you're fully treated for strep or viral or mono tonsillitis clears

Treat your symptoms: The flu and colds are caused by viruses and therefore antibiotics do not work.  Taking antibiotics could cause problems with developing resistant bacteria.  Treat your symptoms if you feel the need, but your immune system will take care of the disease.

Possibly: Bacterial infections can worsen, even if beginning antibiotics.  Sometime patients feel worse in 24 or so hours due to substances released into the body from the death of the bacteria and cell death.  Antibiotics do not guarantee cure.  If one is worsening after beginning antibiotics and there is concern, a phone call to the doctor may be warranted or a re-visit.  Give it a chance then call.

Serious.: without an exam, I can only give general information and 1) infection in an under 1 year old is serious and 2) antibiotics frequently fail due to increasing amounts of antibiotic resistance and this is serious.

Please let her: pediatrician know about her current symptoms. That physician knows her history and will be the best equipped to deal with her on-going illness. I hope she feels better soon.

Don't worry: The tonsils will improve over the next 48 -  72 . It is not common for tonsillitis to spread to the lungs especially since you are now on antibiotics that will destroy the bacteria.
