hello, i have grey pasty/tissue like discharge and itchy private. from research i gathered that it might be bv and i can't use over the counter creams and meds. is it possible to presicribe the adequate antibiotics for me?

RepHresh: Also probiotics.  Changes in the way we process food have decreased good bacteria which produce acid in the vagina to keep bad bacteria under control.  RepHresh is a gel placed in the vagina with a mild acid that will limit growth of bad bacteria.  Fastest method without a prescription  may be to insert plain yogurt into the vagina to get a high count of good bacteria.

Probably expired : your birth control pills are probably expired. You can check the package usually a date is stamped on there. The treatment for bacterial vaginosis, metronidazole, is extremely inexpensive. It is four dollars at Walmart

No: I would recommend being evaluated again. It may not be BV this time.  If it is recurrent bv, there are treatments your doctor can recommend.

Is bv confirmed?: If you have been on recurring antibiotics for bv, you may have eliminated friendly bacteria from your vagina, and taking probiotic pills such as lactobacillus orally or intravaginally, may  help. Also repeated antibiotics cause yeast infections which needs different Rx. Hormonal imbalance ( progestin bcp) or allergy can also cause  itching and dryness.  Good luck.

Not effective: Ascorbic acid, Acetic Acid gel, and povidone-iodine vaginal douches can be tried, but their use is not recommended, as they are significantly less effective than Metronidazole or clindamycin. Probiotics may be tried, but their content is not standardized, and they are often of poor quality. There is no evidence for or against their use to treat bv.

BV cuts?: Well, BV usually does not cause vaginal cuts; however, if you are scratching and have open vaginal wounds, you may need oral antibiotics. A pea sized drop of Neosporin Ointment applied with a Q-tip ( not fingers) and use of baggy cotton undergarments will be helpful; however, I suggest an examination by your physician.

Probiotics: Probiotics are something that you can try in order to change the ph of the vagina to encourage growth of lactobacilli.  Sometimes a woman needs a course of metronidazole, but definitely can try probiotics first.  Healthy diet, regular exercise and sleep as well.  Good luck!
