Somewhat: Mirena IUD does make patient's more at risk for developing functional ovarian cysts that can become hemorrhagic.  However, usually the pain from hemorrhagic ovarian cysts is sharp, fast onset and then resolves over 1-2 weeks.  If pain is continuing for a month and not improving, I would consider further evaluation

Not connected: The Mirena (levonorgestrel) keeps you from getting pregnant, but has no effect on whether or not you have cysts on your ovary - the two are entirely independent of one another.

Not really: Mirena (levonorgestrel) iud strings do not cause infection, nor have anything to do with an ovarian cyst. The ovary will creat a so called cyst for the ovulation process. Iud's do not cause infection , but sexual behavior can put you at risk for infection regardless of the prescence of iud.

Normal: It is normal to have ovarian cysts.  Every woman will have at least one ovarian cyst of at least 2 cm with every ovulatory cycle.

No: Sometimes IUD's can produce spotting, but the severe pain is not normal and bears investigation by your operating surgeon.

Mirena: Mirena contains a progestin. The hormonal response could  be a factor in your ovarian symptoms.

Not risky but : It is not risky to be birth control pill while the  on Mirena (levonorgestrel) iud but it is not likely to help anything. Birth control pills can prevent cyst formation but they do not speed up cyst resolution. Small ovarian cysts simply resolve on their own with no treatment.
