Poorly: Some (not most) ovarian cancers make ca125 which can be assayed in the blood.  There are so many false-positives and false-negatives that most physicians believe that the test should not be used routinely to screen every woman.

i have all the symptoms of ovarian cancer. had a blood test  and it was negative and my scan turned out negative too.  so what is the matter?

Ovarian cancer: More often than not, ovarian cancer does not have symptoms. If your scan and blood tests are negative, obviously one must consider other causes. CA-125 test.: The best blood test is a ca-125 but it is not totally specific.  Other tests, like pelvic exam, and transvaginal ultrasound would be needed.  The ultimate way to know is surgery to see if it is in fact, a tumor of something else.

Unfortunately No: Until now, there is no good way that we can use to screen ovarian cancer unfortunately, ..Not a blood work, not an imaging study- nothing is good and reliable enough to screen ovarian cancer. Please f/u woth your gynecologist regularly.

can a woman have a normal ca125 blood test and still have ovarian cancer?

Possibly: Not usually but there are more accurate tests now , like the ova-1 and if I do a ca-125 i combine it with an he-4 blood test. If you are worried obviously you need to also have an ultrasound and possible further testing and your gyn can refer to to a gyn oncology surgeon- that type of doctor has additional training to deal with pre-cancer and cancer and to rule them in or out.

No: Ovarian cancer is extremely difficult to detect in the early stages. While there are blood tests that are arguably helpful, and a number of ongoing investigations, a CBC will not be helpful.

Several tests done.: Pain and bloating can be signs of ovarian cancer, but they can be just from a painful period.  Ovarian cancer would be more likely in older women, like 40+ years, and most likely in women 70+ years.  Other tests, like pelvic exam, ca-125, and transvaginal ultrasound would be needed.  The ultimate way to know is surgery to see if it is in fact, a tumor of something else.

Yes: There are other cancers that will have a positive ca-125.  They include cancer of the pancreas, stomach, esophagus, liver, breast, colon, or lung.  Cancer of the lining of the abdominal cavity, and cancer of the fallopian tubes or lining of uterus.

Yes.: Ca125 can vary from person to person and can change under various circumstances not related to cancer. It is more useful as a way to track disease progression or treatment success.
