my 5 month old baby has made a poo with a streak of fresh blood in it yesterday. today his poo has a small speck of fresh blood in it. he is an exclusively breastfed baby. at the moment i am taking medication for a head cold (brufen, otrivin nasal)?

Depends: Strings of bright red blood attached to the outside of a hard or bulky stool suggest a scratch/tear in the outlet from a bulky or hard stool. If it is blobs of blood mixed within the stool it suggests a germ like salmonella/shigella  may be the cause of an infectious process. An exam and testing may be needed to sort that out.

No: Otrivin nasal spray (xylometazoline) is a nasal decongestant used to treat allergies and nasal congestion.  Xylometazoline, the active ingredient in Otrivin nasal spray works by constricting blood vessels in the nose.  By constricting or shrinking the blood vessels in the nose, xylometazoline decreases the symptoms of nasal congestion and discharge.

Most nasal sprays: are "addictive" and REBOUND actually results in the need for MORE spray!!!!  I would suggest a cortisone containing OTC Spray (EG:  example only NASOCORT while you eliminate the OTRIVIN then try to use a SALINE SPRAY only!!!!! This problem may require a visit to a EAR NOSE THROAT  ENT  Specialist!

Friends advice: Firstly you followed a non-physicians advice - this is wrong. Secondly grinding and snorting the medication means you are tampering and possibly using the medication in an inappropriate manner. You will be regarded as a high risk patient for misuse, abuse and diversion. Behave yourself - see a doctor and use meds appropriately.

See doctor: In order to wean you off of nasal decongestant spray, a course of nasal steroid and even oral steroid may be needed.  See your doctor.

Do not use: Do not use Otrivin pediatric nasal drops in children under 6 yr of age. Instead use normal saline drops 1-2 drops to each nostril every 3-4 hours to loosen secretions. You can remove excess secretions using a soft nasal bulb syringe.

Otrivin: Its a heart stimulant and should be used with caution if you have mitral stenosis. You should clear it with your cardiologist. Steroid sprays take two to three weeks to work. They may work better if you take an antihistamine as well. ( dont take one with sudafed)
