what is the difference between osteoid osteoma and osteoma? can a osteoid osteoma occur on the skull?

Yes: They're quite different. Osteoma is solid bone, like a rock. Famous in the sinuses but can pop up anywhere. Osteoid osteoma is a tiny piece of painful new spongy bone, like in a marrow cavity, surrounded by your bone that it's made denser. A radiologist may be able to make the call of an osteoid osteoma so it can be roasted and thus de-activated without the need for sugery.

will non contrast ct brain scan show osteoma or meningioma in skull vault right occipital or will contrast ct be required?

Accepted Answer

: Comes down to resolution.  If lesion is large enough, should readily be imaged, and contrast could be employed to be certain if ambiguities are present.  You could certainly discuss this with the radiologist at time of the procedure.

rni has uptake in r occipital poss osteoma/mengioma,ct skull says no parenchymal abnormality&no bone abnormality.previous ct/ subtle benign sclerotic lesion.confused with conflict in scans.is this normal or should i seek further investigation?

: It is not rare that bone scan reveals non specific increased uptake but it usually does not have much clinical meaning by my experience. If CT scan rules out meningioma or bone lesion, there is nothing to worry at this point and you are safe.

: AC joint disease can manifest with those symptoms but not the lesion the skull or a meningioma.

: As has been already answered, all of this comes down to resolution, and images can miss very small lesions.  But both osteomas and meningiomas are very slowly growing lesions, and if one or other is visualized on your next scan, confirms prior presence.

: With bone scan, mildly active means the nuclear trace is seen stronger at that site but most of the time it does not mean much in my experience, radiologists most often over-read for avoiding liability. You should not worry, just wait for the CT of the head.

Bone tumor: Osteoid osteomas are benign bone tumors which typically cause pain at night time.  These tumors are most often seen in bones around the knee, hip, and spine.

Bone pain: It most often causes pain in area it occurs. Occasionally it will irritate other tissues in the area. The pain often responds to Aspirin or other anti-inflammatory medications. Alcohol can intensify the pain. With time, the tumor (which is benign) "burns out" and the pain subsides. If not, an orthopedic oncologist (tumor specialist) can give you other options.
