Pain: Pain is not always the primary symptom of osteoarthreitis, particularly at at its earliest stages. Nor does osteoathritis of the spine always cause pain. It does cause pain especially in the the major joints of the body, ie the shoulders, hips and knees.  There will be pain with weightbearing and there will be limited range of motion. X-rays will show osteoarthritis and should be done when suspect.

Usually many months+: Osteoarthritis (oa) is a disease of wear and tear on joints.  It usually takes a while to develop.  Injury or overuse and overload can increase the rate at which it forms.  Anti-inflamatories can slow it down as can weight reduction, activity modification and pt/ strengthening exercises for supporting structures.  It may take many months to years before oa will show up as symptoms or on an x-ray.

i was told at surgery one year ago that i didn't have any signs of osteoarthritis in the knee. i was told i had a displacement after surgery how come?

Knee displacement: Since you did not mention what kind of knee surgery you had done, it is difficult to relate to what kind of displacement they may be talking about, it is a displaced implanted device? Consult your surgeon and ask him/her to discuss the x-ray findings with you and what will be the treatment to follow. If you are not happy with their response, seek another opinion.

Not necessarily: Not necessarily.  The calcification could be a residual finding from a prior injury to the knee.

Yes: While osteoarthritis can be potentiated by certain things such as poor posture or obesity, it is also a natural process from normal "wear and tear" on our joints from activities of daily living.

can an x-ray really diagnose arthritis? my doctor says my x-ray shows signs of osteoarthritis. i thought arthritis was when theres not enough cartilage in your joints. how can you see that on an x-ray?

X-rays : X-rays can not only diagnose arthritis, they can also differentiate among several different types (rheumatoid, degenerative, autoimmune, infectious, etc).  The word arthritis is latin for  "inflammation of the joint, " and though damage to the cartilage is often present, it is not always seen in every type of arthritis, and certainly not to the same degree.

Sometimes an x-ray alone is not enough, and blood tests are required.  Still, they are an excellent screening test and often do stand alone in making a specific diagnosis of arthritis.

Symptoms: stiff in early morning, pain with climbing or walking down the stairs, standing long enough, feeling bone to bone sound when moving the knee...
Signs: local warmness, mild swelling or deformity, palpating the knee when passively moving it can feel the bone to bone contact ...
A person with OA has one or several symptoms or signs or no S/S.

See below: Low lymphocytes can be seen in a variety not just autoimmune diseases.  Some patients may have low lymphocytes to start with and that could be there normal.

: At your age, and with the symptoms you mentioned it would be worthwhile to see your doctor for a review of your symptoms and a general evaluation. It is unusual to have severe osteoarthritis at your age unless there has been significant injuries. There may be other diseases that are causing this type of pain. The sooner they are identified the better.
