every morning there is a orange/white coating on my tongue. what causes this?

Maybe thrush(fungus): The tongue is known to have many variations with pigmenting, size, appearance, & not always due to disease. Causes of tongue that looks patchy include: lichen planus (responds to steroids), white sponge nevus (familial, benign, permanent), smoker's leukoplakia (2% risk of cancer, needs biopsy), hairy leukoplakia (due to epsteinbarr virus), warts (due to papillomavirus), "thrush" (rx antifungals).

Buildup of a lot : It is a buildup of food particles, bacteria, sloughing dead tissue and a variety of things.  Because the tongue surface has deep fissures everything gets "stuck' in the fissures.  Brushing it daily is always a good thing.  It also improves the sense of taste.

Vague: Could be a number of causes- meds, supplements, allergies, foods/beverages or actually not brushing your tongue.  Do you have bad breath too?

my tongue has an orange coating a couple of days after a tooth extraction. i did not eat or drink anything orange. should i be concerned?

Accepted Answer

No worries: Not to worry. Likely some slight remnants of the bleeding . Try scraping your tongue with floss or your toothbrush. Easy way is to stick your tongue way out and then put the brush on top of tongue near the back and then pull your tongue back in. Better than shoving the brush way back in to the throat area. If it does not clear up , see the surgeon. Good Luck.

am i allergic to lemon? when i drink lemonade my throat feels like it has a sort of coating on it. when i do mouthwash and eat citrus candy my tongue feels weird. is that related or a different issue? how can i be allergic to lemon but not orange?

: How can you be sensitive to one food out of many in a group but not others? They are analogous but not homologous, similar but not identical. You would be advised to discuss your "allergy" with a specialist Allergist.

See your dentist: Candida albicans is a fungus accumulates usually on your tongue or inner cheeks. The condition is a minor problem if you're healthy. Candida infections can occur when your immune system is weakened by disease or drugs such as steroids. Eating unsweetened yogurt and acidophilus capsules will solve the problem. Rec.: see your dentist if the condition gets painful.

Sleep disorder: The coating in the morning can be explained by mouth breathng and the effect of dryness on the tongue.  It might be adviseable to see if you have sleep apnoea.

Squamous Cells: Squamous Cells are flat, scale like cells that cover our digestive &amp; respiratory tracts, hollow organs &amp; much of the outer layer of skin. Thus, squamous cells are normal on the tongue.

Coated tongue can be due to:
•	Smoking or other oral tobacco use
•	Alcohol use 
•	Mouth breathing
•	Low roughage diet — eating mostly soft or mashed foods
•	Mechanical irritation from sharp tooth edges or dental appliances
•	Fever
•	 Prolonged use of antibiotics that may cause  oral yeast infection
