what can ill defined optic disc margins mean? i have amblyopia but apparently in the opposite eye.  would the amblyopic eye have higher prescription?

Ill defined margins: ill-defined margins of the optic disc generally are not of any consequence.  As long as the optic disc is not swollen and there are signs of normal intracranial pressure, then it is nothing to worry about.  Best to check with her doctor for details.

i have elevation in optic disc in left eye. lab work all fine, no evidence of optic neuritis. ct scan ok, but asymmetry in the discs. mri due in 6 weeks' time as precaution and follow-up appointment in 8 months. what could this be?

: Runs is family? Ask around.  Otherwise based on you physical exam (BP taken in both arms so high blood pressure not missed eg. Could just be you. Follow local Drs advice and get a second opinion.  I would be suprized if CT showed discs???

No: Swelling of the optic disk is a serious sign that requires a prompt medical evaluation.  Dry patches on the cornea are common and are treated with artificial tears.  Using the computer can exacerbate dry eye but has no relationship to the optic disk swelling.

In some cases yes: The most common cause of a raised optic disc is a benign condition called optic nerve head drusen. However, additional testing is needed to differentiate this from optic disc swelling, or papilledema. Optic disc swelling indicates a potentially serious problem such as elevated pressure of the fluid around the brain. You should have a full examination by an experienced ophthalmologist.

: You should have it rechecked this year. If you do not have any other new symptom (pain, impaired visual acuity) you should not worry much.

Optic neuritis: Optic neuritis may cause headaches. It is usually responsive to steroids given intravenously and then orally and then tapered off when disc swelling recedes.

Several possibilitie: Several disease of the eye and brain can change the optic disc.  This includes, glaucoma, drusen, multiple sclerosis, papilledema from brain tumor, intracranial hypertension, ischemic optic neuropathy and others.  Consult with your ophthalmologist to determine which type is causing your problem.
