get eva;: Black stripes down one nail could be a subungual hematoma.  Red or brown streaks could be splinter hemorrhages.  Brown/black lines from the nail plate to tip are often seen in people with dark skin &amp; are normal. Subungual Melanoma can cause nail ridges and dark colors of the cuticle. It usually begin in the nail matrix.  It most often effects the thumbs or big toes. Get checked out when in doubt.

Melanonychia: If melanonychia, or dark streaks on the nails, is secondary to systemic and/or dermatologic disease, treatment of the underlying condition is helpful.
If melanonychia is secondary to a drug, discontinuation of the offending agent may result in clearance.
In rare cases melanonychia can be caused by melanoma, a form of skin cancer.

Nail line: Usually it is a normal variant. Sometimes a mole or even a rare melanoma skin cancer can look like a black line in the nail. You should have a dermatogist evaluate the nail.

often notice horizontal ridges on thumb nail, usually only one nail. currently there are 2 horizontal on one nail. what could cause this ?

If only on ONE: nail it usually indicates TRAUMA to that cuticle at a remote time (often seen with manicures)
Multiple horizontal ridges indicate an ILLNESS or NUTRITIONAL DEFICIENCY at the time of the nail growth.

Oral anti-fungal: Nail fungus infections are "dug in", and only respond to oral anti-fungal treatment. Topicals are a waste of time. Your toenails are probably infected too - if not, it's very likely that your thumbnail problem is not due to a fungus. Either way you should see a dermatologist. Contrary to popular belief, oral anti-fungals are not dangerous when prescribed correctly by a knowledgeable dermatologist.

what does it mean if my healthy 30 year old son has one thumb nail that grows in bumpy..all other nails are perfect,  should i be concerned, worried!

No concern: If all of the nails are healthy except one, it is most likely related to an old injury to the growth area of the nail bed and may be permanently irregular.  Other systemic causes usually affect all of the nails and fungal infection makes the nail thickened and is not common in the fingernails unless the toe nails are affected or chronic athletes foot.

? Overuse: wonder if you are using that thumb a lot for something causing some irritation? Please see a hand surgeon if it persists.

Splinter hemorrhage: This is likely a splinter hemorrhage.  This is very common after a minor trauma to the nail - you may not have even been initially aware of the inciting injury.  It should go away in a few days.  If it persists then I advise consulting a dermatologist.
