Depends: All oncologists are trained to diagnose, stage, and treat cancers specific to their specialty. As a radiation oncologist, I am trained to participate in the multidisciplinary management and treatment of all solid tumors. Our board certification is based on training of all solid tumor sites.However, some oncologists may decide to specialize in an area of their choice particularly in academic center.

if i become and oncologist in america ... can i work in australia or do i have to go to school over in australia?

Depends: To go from one country to another depends on the country's laws.  You will have to take the country's licensing exam, possibly do an abbreviated training to become accustomed to practices and regulations there, and then be allowed to practice.  Yes, you have the same knowledge but it's the regulations (plus immigration/taxation issues).

what device is used by oncologists to detect cancer and how does it work?

It is not hard to fi: There is no single devise that we use, we use a variety of examinations/tests and often a biopsy to confirm if a tumor is cancerous. A medical examination(physical exam) is the first step, followed by appropriate imaging tests(using x-rays and ct/mri scans) to locate a tumor in the body which is then biopsied with a knife or a needle. A miscroscopic exm is then done to look for cancer cells.

Children's hospital: Most pediatric hematologist oncologists work at academic medical centers (a hospital associated with a university) or a specialized children's  hospital.

Training: To be a pediatric oncologist, one must first obtain an undergraduate degree (4 years), then medical school (4 years), then general pediatrics residency (3 years), and finally pediatric hematology-oncology fellowship training (3 years). It is a very satisfying career, and i wish you the best if you choose this career.

Hospital/cancer ctr: In addition to cancer hospital, also you would be able to find them at some cancer centers.

mother in law had blood work done. b12 came back at 900. them she was told to see an oncologist. why is this?

Accepted Answer

Not because of this: There must be something else going on. That is not a high number. Perhaps this was ordered because of anemia or something else. A lot of oncologists also specialize in blood disorders, like anemia, or a low blood count.

issues with insomnia for a while.worse on tamoxifen.ambien (zolpidem) does not work for me.would i upset or step on my oncologists toes if i went to a sleep spec?

Absolutely not: I am sure the oncologist would very much appreciate the input from the sleep specialist. Your oncologist knows the effect of sleep and fatigue on the immune system and the importance of a good nights sleep. Consultation would be most welcome I am sure. Best wishes.
