Zyprexa (olanzapine): An atypical antipsychotic approved by fda for tx of schizophrenia & bipolar disorders. It is structurally similar to Clozapine but classified as thienobenzodiazepine. It is manufactured by eli lilly co. May cause involuntary movements, akathisia, fatigue, red eyes, dry mouth, anhedonia, dizziness, weight gain, seizures, metabolic changes such as diabetes.

Several things: Approved uses our schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Off label uses are for the stabilization of certain types of personality disorders, intermittent explosive disorder, and sometimes as an appetite stimulant in severe forms of anorexia nervosa. As it is a very calming med, I have used saphris, (asenapine) seroquel and Loxapine to replace Olanzapine successfully,  but every patient is unque and should carefully consider risks and benefits of any change.

Pains and olanzapine: This is not marketed as a pain drug. Nerve pain has both a central and peripheral component. Central,acting agents, like olanzapine will have a calming effect and often improve nerve related pains, and improve sleep better.

YES: Similar to antidepressants, olanzepine does reach a steady state level and so it is important to take the medications as prescribed. However, unlike antidepressants some of the atypical antipsychotics can have an immediate effect as well and even come in an injectible form.
