what causes occipital lymph node swelling? i'm pretty sure that's what i have on the left side it's only one it's been there for about 3 months

Dunno: Most commonly lymph nodes swell in response to a nearby infection. You say this has been going on for three months with no change. Other possibilities might be a lipoma, a lymphoma, some other mass. Have you been seen by a doc and mentioned this? Have any other symptoms?

Irritants/ bites : Solo enlarged nodes are usually reflective of a local process. Irritation of the scalp, a local bug bite, etc.Nodes usually run a 3-4 week cycle of enlrging when stimulated, processing their irritant and returning to resting size. If continuing to enlarge, painful or persisting in an enlarged size after 3-4 wks, i would have it looked at.

near my occipital lymph nodes on left side near base of skull i have pain to touch and if i bend neck downward.been a lil over a week now i have no other symptoms.seems to be slight swelling cant tell if node swelling or not. could this be cancer?

: The most likely cause is infection or inflammation in the scalp around the occipital lymph nodes drainage. Since it is painful to touch, warm salt water compress application for 5 -10minutes twice daily might help. It is best , however, to see the PCP for evaluation and appropriate management.

Lymph nodes: No touching the nodes will not make them swell. Most lymph node enlargement in a two year old  is due to upper respiratory infections caused by viruses.

Lymph node swelling: Lymph nodes are part of your body's natural defense against both infections and foreign objects. Around the neck and head is the most common place for them to enlarge since they help to fight colds, ear infections, sinus infections, scalp infections, and dental. Enlarged lymph nodes in the back of your head usually come from scalp infections, ear infections (sometimes just from ear rings).

Monitoring Centers: The lymphatic system absorbs and carries things too big to go into the arteries and veins like bacteria eaten by white cells and digested food. The lymph nodes "taste" the lymph to see if anything bad is there like bacteria, viruses, cancers, etc. When it detects a problem, it alerts the immune system by enlarging in response. Prolonged enlargement should be biopsied.  If no problem, they shrink.

Find Reason: You need to see your doctor or dentist to find out. If they are swollen, then they are collecting bacteria.  Where do you have an infection that is feeding them?  Stop the infection.

Various things: Lymph nodes enlargement can be caused by various reasons- among them would  include- infection ( especially in the arm pit- infection of the root of the hair is common), inflammation, wound/trauma/scratches etc, malignancy - for instance- spread from adjacent organ like breast, or lymphoma etc.  Infection would be the most common, see your doc and have yourself checked. Infected wound: It sounds like your wound is infected.  Have it looked at and possibly cultured. You may have to be on antibiotics.
