what are some causes of numbness in the fingertips?  i'm having the problem in both hands.

Quite a few causes..: Carpal tunnel syndrome (pinched nerve in wrist), ulnar nerve entrapment (elbow), and at times from pinched nerve in neck areas. Also, diabetic neuropathy can do so as well, but often affecting feet/toes first/or concurrently. Some diseases such as multiple sclerosis, medications use (some HIV meds)/chemo, syphillis, heavy metal toxicity can do so as well. If u r concerned, consult doc. Good luck.

i'm having a lot of swelling in left lower leg. no injuries. i consulted with a dr. who said they believed i have p.a.d. i never followed up to confirmed. now im experiencing numbness in my fingertips. are the 2 related? and what can be done for both?

: Definitely maybe but hard to say for sure. Numbness in the fingertips can be from many things, including circulatory problems though nerve problems like a herniated disc in your neck, a pinched nerve or neuropathy from diabetes or some other cause is more common. Definitely something worth looking into!

It depends: Numbness can be caused by many reasons. Some of the chemo drugs can cause peripheral neuropathy which can menifest as numbness and tingling, usually affecting both the toes and the fingers. It is usually progressive and can get worse with each treatment, so you should let your oncologist know about it and decide when to modify your treatment to prevent this problem from worsening.

Sudden...: If it's sudden, it generally means that there is some nerve impingement going on.  However, this usually doesn't happen in all the fingertips and toes.  There are a number of different types of neuropathy that can cause this, but these come on gradually.  See a doctor for a workup.

Numbness: The most common reason would be some kind of neuropathy (problem with nerves).  Diabetes is a common associated problem with it and causes a "glove and stocking" area neuropathy.  If you have not had a check make sure you get your blood glucose checked.

There are meds.: You may be experiencing "peripheral neuropathy" as a result of your chemotherapy. There are several medications for this, so you should ask your oncologist. EMG: How long have you had the numbness.  Did you have both an EMG and nerve conduction studies.   When was the EMG and nerve conduction studies completed in relation to onset of symptoms.  Do you have the actual results of the EMG with you or just "it was normal?"

in certain situations, if the EMG and nerve conduction studies are done too soon, they will come back normal.
